What Is a Board Foot?

A board foot is the standard unit used to measure hardwood lumber.

It represents:

  • 1 inch thick

  • 12 inches wide

  • 12 inches long

This equals 144 cubic inches of wood.

Board Foot Formula

To calculate board feet, use this formula:

(Thickness × Width × Length) ÷ 144 = Board Feet

Where:

  • Thickness = inches

  • Width = inches

  • Length = inches

Why Board Foot Matters

When buying hardwood lumber, pricing is almost always based on board footage, not individual pieces.

This allows you to:

  • Compare pricing accurately

  • Order exact quantities

  • Avoid overpaying for waste

At Dragon Ruck, every product is listed with precise board footage, so you know exactly what you’re getting.
